Pro: By putting a tax on gasoline, we will not only decrease the amount of fossil fuels used, but make the planet healthier. The tax should be installed since it would be a small price to make our world a better place. "In fact, the authors estimate that the health benefits of a gasoline tax would increase by 90 percent once the variation in responsiveness of vehicle emissions is taken into account."(Brunel, nber.org, 2019). As this statistic shows, health benefits could increase by 90% if were to have a gas tax. This would be because less people would be driving so far, or as much. Since the price increased, public transportation would increase which would help get even more cars off the road.
Con: A con to raising the gas tax is that it will cost more money for the American people to get gas. This increase will cause Americans to make tougher decisions about how they spend their money. This will only make it tougher for families living paycheck to paycheck and they may have to sacrifice other things to get the gas they need. "It’s estimated that a 1 percent increase in gas prices takes $1 billion out of consumers’ pockets. That’s $1 billion dollars that could be spent on eating out, clothes, and leisure activities."(Boone, atr.org, 2015). With all this money being taken from American people this will hurt the economy and the American people, taking away even more money from the people. Raising the gas tax will only hurt the American economy and it's people.
In my opinion I don't think the gas tax should be raised. If we were to raise this tax, it would only hurt the economy and the American people. It would make some of them even more desperate, and they would have to choose what they couldn't get so they could get gas. We would be forcing people to possibly give up things they need to have a good life. This would hurt the economy as people would have to give up certain things they like to have in their life. Which would hurt the businesses that make them. I believe that the gas tax shouldn't be raised because it would hurt the economy and the American people.
I think gas being raised could help the government pay off their debt faster, so I disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree because if taxes on gas are raised it could increase the ammount of roads and bridges being repaired where if the taxes are lowered they will only get worse because the government doesnt have money to pay to fix them
ReplyDeleteI believe that if the government raises taxes on gas, then it could be highly beneficial for the infrastructure of our country. You must think for the long term, and the benefits our improving transportation and the infrastructure of our country could revolutionize our economy.
